Course Outline

First Session: The initial session introduces procurement and its significance, focusing on supplier relationships, the sourcing process, and the concept of value-based sourcing. During the second half, participants will explore value-risk mapping, understanding the importance of categorizing suppliers and tailoring strategies for different groups. We will also discuss when and why to outsource. Finally, the session covers price volatility and supply chain variability, including how to structure contracts to address these challenges.

Second Session: This session focuses on optimizing procurement activities, specifically balancing purchase costs against service levels. Participants will complete a home exercise using optimization and linear programming to develop minimum cost models while considering service levels. The modeling will also incorporate different product offerings, such as standard bids, minimum volume bids, and volume discounts. Extensive use of Microsoft Excel will be required to develop and optimize these models, providing participants with deep insights into the trade-offs involved in selecting offers.

Third Session: The final session addresses supply chain coordination, examining problems caused by demand variability and information gaps among supply chain partners. Operating in an environment of uncertainty, procurement and supply chain managers must reduce the impact of information delays that lead to the bullwhip effect.

During this critical session, we will discuss the causes of the bullwhip effect, its impact on the supply chain, and strategies for managers to mitigate these risks among partners.

In the final half of the session, we will explore the uncertainty inherent in customer demand, develop simulation models to replicate this uncertainty, and create solutions to manage it. This session offers participants valuable insights into how trust can maximize revenue for supply chain partners.
